FullCodePress is over!

August 21, 2007 by Russ Weakley

Two teams of seven web developers (Australia vs New Zealand) battled it out over the weekend at FullCodePress. Both teams had 24 hours to build a fully functional website within the time frame. They were given a real website and real clients (an existing non-profit organisation each) at the beginning of the 24 hours and then let loose!

The results were amazing. The teams worked incredibly hard for the full 24 hours and produced two high quality websites. They also made two clients very happy.

The judges then deliberated for over 2 hours before announcing the winner – the New Zealand CodeBlacks! Regardless, it was a closely fought event, with both teams doing a fantastic job.

The best and fairest player was awarded to Australia’s Ruth Ellison.

You may have noticed that there was extensive online activity on the FullCodePress website and associated outlets.

In the 24 hours of the event, a series of dedicated volunteers took hundreds of photos – over 330 of which were quickly edited and pumped onto Flickr.

These volunteers also wrote and posted 122 blog posts, allowing us to give minute by minute descriptions of the unfolding events.

There were 175 official twitter posts (not counting the mass of twitter posts that were done by people from their own accounts). This is even more impressive when you consider that Twitter was down for several hours during the night, and all volunteers were locked out of the news room while the judges deliberated.

The volunteers also videoed, edited, top and tailed (adding intros and sponsor logos) and then uploaded 17 amazing videos to YouTube – while the event unfolded – with more to come in the next week or so.

The vibe in the FCP news room was amazing. Some volunteers stayed up for the full 24 hours to ensure that information was being pumped out to the various channels. To keep us awake during the night, we watched YouTube movies and Alistair’s eye surgery footage on the big screen.

Some highlights included:

  • Seeing Lachlan Hunt dance – again!
  • Working in the news room with a bunch of insane people throughout the 24 hour period
  • Watching the teams work together, supportively for the full 24 hours
  • The volunteers – all of them!
